Following a near death experience, firefighter/paramedic Emma Hill's world is turned upside down. Haunted by a vision of the man who could very well be her soul mate, Emma is desperate to find that man, but fear stands in her way.
With a maniacal ex-husband determined to get her back, Emma struggles to stay clear of him or risk living a life riddled by quiet desperation and abuse. Fighting with a dirty cop is dangerous enough, but when that dirty cop is her ex-husband the stakes are raised to disastrous levels.
Craig Masterson, the firefighter who saved Emma's life, finds himself falling for her. When he learns who her ex-husband is, he realizes that this is a battle he may not win.
Choosing to love her is a deadly game. If he can stay alive, their love may flourish, but only if he can defeat her ex.
Heat level low (for this book - the rest in the series are moderate to moderately-high), suspense, thriller level moderate. Some swearing. 18+ Cliffhanger.
Edge of the Heat Edge of the Heat Romantic Suspense Series edition by Lisa Ladew Romance eBooks
The story started with a bang, from chapter 1 I was hooked, could not put it down. The characters were fun, hard working EMTs and firefighters. They had close friendships, were loyal and supporting for each other.
The professional world was written in a sense that seemed real and believable, enticing.
The 'vision' was a bit awkward to me at first, a bit immature. And how Emma clung to it, made major, stupid, socially unacceptable decisions based on it -- even though everything else pointed out to her being wrong -- I just didn't get it. The person Emma was portrait as did not match to her actions and thoughts.
While the professional and suspense side of the book was appealing and captivating, the romance side was immature and awkward, even in the dialog.
I personally dislike books that end in the cliffhanger, and series that really is only one book, just divided into many sections. I just get the feeling of 'cashing in' on the reader.
This book was not what I expected, but I will give the series another chance.

Edge of the Heat Edge of the Heat Romantic Suspense Series edition by Lisa Ladew Romance eBooks Reviews
I devoured these books. They are AMAZING! This series is the first I have read of Lisa Ladew's. I will definitely be buying any book I can get my hands on by her.
The only reason problem I had at all with this series is the story changed at times. It is a big pet peeve of mine when an author doesn't keep their own story straight. In the first book, after a the bakery explodes, Craig and Emma are partners at a meeting. He tells her one of the injured reminded him of his mom. She had died from cancer 3 years prior. However in book 4, Craig's mom and dad at the wedding and happily married after 30 years. I overlook and dont even catch most small things like this, but this was a big one to change in my opinion. Otherwise this whole series would be a solid 5 stars!!!!!
I also would of liked to read about the arrest of the fire chief. In the first book, Craig is undercover and finds incrimination evidence on the fire chiefs computer. But he is never mentioned in the subsequent books.....even after they tied up the investigation. (less) [edit]Loading trans
I think there should be options to choose more than one description. I found the story not just full of surprises but had twists too. It wasn't just suspenseful, it was thoughtful and hopeful also. The pace was not just steady but went from that to fast then back again. You find you have to stay with it and not put it down. The characters, as always were not just developed, they are complex too. I have all of this series and it's been a while since I read them. I went back to the first one and read each one again before I bought #7. It's beyond "WOW", it's awesome, it's a nail biter, it has it's comic relief here and there just when you need it, and then the romance sets in. I have 2 authors I follow and Lisa is definitely one of them. Her stories are so well done, so well plotted, so well thought out that there is absolutely no hesitation in buying her books. If her name is on the cover, buy it! I'd like to see more of these characters in the future but if they are happily ensconced in their places now that's good too. I'll wait for Ms. Ladew's next book or series and will enjoy them as much as the "Heat" series. Kudos to you Ms. Ladew.
Ogle the cover. Avoid the book. Here's why.
"The future was the future, and if her vision foretold the future, which she was sure it did, then she was on her way to the future right now, and everything she was doing was right and taking her to that future."
"And when I see you or think of you, a sense of fully knowing who you are and your relationship to me fills my senses - almost like how I can think of a strawberry and know what it would look like, smell like, taste like, and feel like."
"And, I have a twin sister and I don't know who she is and I don't know if she lives here, but if she does, and I move, I may never run into her."
Perhaps worse than all the plot manipulations is the fact that the reader is assumed to be a dolt. Instead of creating a nuanced villain, (Reece) we are clubbed over the head with multiple over the top examples of horrible behavior.
The writing style, the over-emphasis on "the vision", many editing errors, and stilted dialogue made this an exhausting read.
"He wasn't her dream man, because he wasn't the man from the vision, so what was she doing, going and falling in love with him?"
Happily, sometimes the characters speak the truth. ""Your boyfriend?" he sneered, sounding like a two-bit villain in every crappy movie ever."
The final nail in the coffin... CLIFFHANGER!
Okay, I kind of thought the cover was a bit cheesy, but it was free. I gave it a try, but the premise was just strange. The main character has a vision of her dream man and is convinced due to a past vision that this means the man in her dream is the person she will marry and spend forever with even though she had no idea who he is.
******Spoilers*****
I don't typically write reviews with spoilers, but it was necessary in order to prove my point. The heroine sees a man with dark skin and hair in her dream. She meets a great guy who is not dark skinned and connects over some totally cheesy and unrealistic mandatory therapy ( trust me, I have a psychology degree), but instead goes on a date with a with a rude and self centered doctor just because of his skin color. She has a horrible time but keeps chasing him until he tries to rape her. The great guy comes over as soon as she needs him and calls a law enforcement friend to help, but she ends up chasing the friend outside to ask him out ( right after she was almost violently raped the same night) because he had...you guessed it...dark skin. In the end, the nice guy gets covered by soot fighting a fire and turns out to be the dark skinned guy. Of course...
Honestly, the heroine was acting like a thirteen year old, and I have no idea why anyone would want to hook up with someone that kooky. The only plus side was that the book was at least edited well.
